Ayigafrik is the dance company of choreographer Assayigah. Founded in 1985 at the very start of his career, Ayigafrik has changed and evolved according to the different circumstances, creations, and artists involved. Through the years, it has been the start of many a successful dancing career.

Fleeing wars and revolutions, men, women, and children find themselves prisoners of their own escape, in the refugee camps. There, everyday life is but poverty, lack of essential hygiene, sadness, and wait. Circumstances force them to question everything. They have to learn how to live together all over again. With their differences, their hopes, and their fears, until the long-awaited return…

Le Reve de l’Enfer (The Dream of Hell) – 1997
Toured Africa and Showed at MASA
The great omnipotent evil presence, clad in red, crushes the helpless masses from its Ivory Tower. It rules through inaccessibility, pride, and bloodshed. But as night starts to fade, the dream starts to dissipate, the masses regain consciousness, and they force the evil presence to come crashing down. Its desperate calls for support remain unheard as it is finally banished.

From their parallel dimension, the ZOTAGNAS have been watching the trivial, egocentric, warmongering humans, and they have decided to pay them a visit. And to attempt to pass on a little of the love and peace they so desperately lack.

Relates the true story of the Company’s arrest and imprisonment, as the artists were embarking on a two-month tour of Europe. Behind bars, poverty, lack of hygiene and desperation are the artist’s daily bread, as he is forced to ask himself difficult questions – Should one hate? Can one forget?

| Cry of the Desert – 2001
Performed at The Mission, Reading, and Chelmsford Cathedral Festival
Two youths wander in the desert in search of camels to work with, desperate to overcome the famine and misery that threatens their lives. However, once they arrive there, disaster strikes. They are lost, disorientated, and the heat drives them out of their minds.
Their tale becomes a metaphor for the present political situation in Africa. The duet does not seek to predict or answer questions, but rather, through the expressivity of movement, to convey a sense of the physical and spiritual environment generated by the circumstances. |
